As the capital of Asturias, Oviedo combines history, culture, green spaces and a lively student atmosphere. Home to the University of Oviedo, the city welcomes thousands of national and international students every year and serves as an excellent base for exploring the rest of the region.

The Historic Centre
The historic centre of Oviedo is one of the best-preserved old towns in northern Spain. Walking through its pedestrian streets, visitors will discover elegant squares, traditional architecture, churches and countless cafés and terraces.
The city's most famous square, Plaza de la Catedral, is home to the impressive Catedral de San Salvador, a Gothic masterpiece that has been welcoming pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago for centuries.
A Vibrant Student City
Home to the University of Oviedo, the city offers a welcoming international environment where thousands of students from around the world live, study and enjoy their Erasmus experience.
Its manageable size, friendly atmosphere and active student life make Oviedo a comfortable and exciting city for international students.

Pre-Romanesque Heritage
One of Oviedo's greatest treasures is its pre-Romanesque heritage. On the slopes of Mount Naranco, visitors can find Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, two remarkable 9th-century monuments recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The area also offers some of the best panoramic views of the city and is perfect for a peaceful walk outside the city centre.
Asturian Gastronomy and Cider
No visit to Oviedo would be complete without experiencing Asturian cider culture. Calle Gascona, often known as the “Cider Boulevard”, is lined with traditional cider houses where visitors can watch the famous escanciado technique.
It is also one of the best areas to try authentic Asturian cuisine, from cachopo and fabada to local cheeses and desserts.

Parque San Francisco
Located in the heart of the city, Parque San Francisco is one of Oviedo's most iconic green spaces. It is the perfect place to relax, go for a walk or take a break between classes while enjoying a peaceful atmosphere in the city centre.
The park is also home to the famous Mafalda sculpture, one of the most beloved spots for visitors and students. Right next to the park is Calle Uría, Oviedo's main shopping street, where you can find many shops, cafés and everyday services.
A City of Culture and Literature
Oviedo has a strong cultural tradition reflected in its theatres, museums, libraries and literary heritage. The city is closely linked to Leopoldo Alas “Clarín”, author of La Regenta, one of the most important novels in Spanish literature.
Throughout the year, Oviedo hosts concerts, exhibitions, festivals and cultural events that make it one of the most vibrant cultural centres in northern Spain.

Local Life at El Fontán
Mercado El Fontán is one of the best places to experience everyday life in Oviedo. This traditional market has been a meeting point for locals for generations and offers a glimpse into Asturian culture, food and local products.
The surrounding area is also perfect for walking, having a coffee or discovering small shops and traditional architecture.
